About Santander

Banco Santander, S.A., Grupo Santander is the largest financial and credit group in Spain. In addition to Spain, Santander holds one of the leading positions in the UK and a number of Latin American countries, it is also represented in the US. The key structure of the group is Banco Santander. It is headquartered in the city of Santander (Cantabria).

Grupo Santander consisted of more than 780 companies as of 2022, with the main one, Banco Santander, accounting for around a third of assets (however, the name Banco Santander is often applied to the entire group).

Activities

 

The group's activities are divided according to two criteria: geographical and functional. Four regions are distinguished geographically:

  • Europe - Spain, UK, Portugal (Banco Santander Totta, S.A.) and Poland; in 2020, the region has 84,000 employees, 4,800 branches (of which 2,900 in Spain), €19.7bn turnover, €2.66bn net profit, €1.08 trillion in assets.
  • South America - Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Peru and Uruguay; 65,000 employees and 4,400 branches; turnover in 2020 €14.8bn, net profit €2.93bn, assets €238bn.
  • North America - US and Mexico, 38,000 employees, 2,000 branches; turnover in 2020: €11bn, net profit €1.49bn, assets €223bn.

Functional division:

  • Retail banking - turnover of €37.2bn in 2020, net profit of €4.2bn.
  • Corporate and investment banking - turnover of €5.4 billion, net profit of €1.8 billion.
  • Asset management and insurance - €370 billion in assets under management, €2.1 billion turnover in 2020, net profit of €868 million.

Santander recruitment process in 2026

  1. Online application form
    • One of the first stages of the recruitment process is filling in the application form on Santander Careers website.

    • The online application form is usually presented as a questionnaire with the option of importing data from a LinkedIn or CV file.

    • The applicant is required to provide information about work experience, education, skills and other necessary details.

    • There may be questions both about job preferences (e.g. desired type of employment, country and city of residence) and more personal questions (e.g. race and ethnicity, religion, disability)

  2. Phone / Video Interview
    • Successful candidates are invited for a 15-20 min. phone call.

    • Soft skills are usually assessed during this call by the Santander recruiter.

    • In some cases, Santander hiring manager may invite you for a video interview (most commonly conducted with HireVue.) For software engineering positions, candidates may be asked to complete a coding challenge (problems on algorithms + take-home challenges.)

  3. Online tests
    • The next stage of the Santander recruitment process is an online assessment. The candidate will be sent an email invitation to complete Santander tests.

    • Santander uses different types of recruitment tests to assess candidates and their suitability for the position they are applying for.

  4. Assessment centre
    • Successful candidates are invited to visit the nearest Santander headquarters or office.

    • Candidates will have a chance to personally meet the hiring manager, team leaders and seniors during the assessment day.

    • Santander may organise a group exercise with candidates as part of the hiring procedure.

  5. Partner interview
    • The final stage of the recruitment process.

    • The candidate will have a chance to meet the hiring manager, department director and/or division lead.

    • Normally, there is no assessment at this stage.

    • Candidates are mostly expected to demonstrate soft skills and a desire to join Santander.
