About Santander

Banco Santander, S.A., Grupo Santander is the largest financial and credit group in Spain. In addition to Spain, Santander holds one of the leading positions in the UK and a number of Latin American countries, it is also represented in the US. The key structure of the group is Banco Santander. It is headquartered in the city of Santander (Cantabria).

Grupo Santander consisted of more than 780 companies as of 2022, with the main one, Banco Santander, accounting for around a third of assets (however, the name Banco Santander is often applied to the entire group).

Activities

The group's activities are divided according to two criteria: geographical and functional. Four regions are distinguished geographically:

  • Europe - Spain, UK, Portugal (Banco Santander Totta, S.A.) and Poland; in 2020, the region has 84,000 employees, 4,800 branches (of which 2,900 in Spain), €19.7bn turnover, €2.66bn net profit, €1.08 trillion in assets.
  • South America - Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Peru and Uruguay; 65,000 employees and 4,400 branches; turnover in 2020 €14.8bn, net profit €2.93bn, assets €238bn.
  • North America - US and Mexico, 38,000 employees, 2,000 branches; turnover in 2020: €11bn, net profit €1.49bn, assets €223bn.

Functional division:

  • Retail banking - turnover of €37.2bn in 2020, net profit of €4.2bn.
  • Corporate and investment banking - turnover of €5.4 billion, net profit of €1.8 billion.
  • Asset management and insurance - €370 billion in assets under management, €2.1 billion turnover in 2020, net profit of €868 million.

How does Santander hire?

Santander hires in five stages, and the online tests are the third. Two more stages follow for the people who get through.

The tests are the one stage with nobody on the other side: a score decides who goes through. They are also the one stage you can rehearse beforehand, which is what the rest of this page is for.

Which tests does Santander use?

Expect a numerical and a verbal reasoning test: they are the pair most large employers set. Many add a logical test, a situational judgement test or a personality questionnaire, and technical roles often bring a mechanical test.

We do not know the exact set Santander will send you: it changes with the role you applied for, and from one intake to the next. Your invitation email names each test and its publisher, so read it before you start practising. How are Santander tests scored?

Your raw score is turned into a percentile: your place among everyone who has taken that test. A percentile of 80 means you did better than 80 in every 100 candidates in the comparison group. Employers rarely publish the percentile they cut at, and we do not know the one Santander uses.

Because the scale is relative, a couple more right answers near the middle of the group move you a long way up it. Our report gives you a percentile after every practice test, so you can watch yours climb.

How do you prepare for Santander tests?

Take as many practice tests as you can, and change the settings as you go. Start with the solutions showing, so every question you miss is explained on the spot.

Then switch the timer on, take away the option to skip, and add negative marking, so a wrong guess costs you a mark. After a few tests like that, the real Santander test is one more run of something you have already done.
