Microsoft Corporation is one of the largest multinational companies producing software for various kinds of computing equipment - personal computers, game consoles, PDAs, mobile phones, etc. It develops the most widely used software platform in the world at the moment - the Windows family of operating systems.

Company divisions produce the Xbox family of game consoles as well as accessories for personal computers (keyboards, mice, etc.). Since 2012, it has produced its own tablet computer, Surface. Microsoft products are sold in more than 80 countries, software is translated into more than 45 languages.

The company's headquarters is located in Redmond, Washington, USA.

The corporation employs 181,000 people as of 30 June 2021. In 2018, it was ranked second on Forbes magazine's list of the world's top 500 employers.

Owners and management

Microsoft shares are distributed as follows: Bill Gates owns 7.55%, Steve Ballmer 4.66%, other corporate executives have less than a percent, and the remaining securities are publicly traded on the NASDAQ exchange: MSFT. The company had a market capitalization of $2.14 trillion as of July 2021.

The company's non-executive chairman is John W. Thompson, and the CEO is Satya Nadella.

Microsoft Corporation is a manufacturer of a wide range of software and hardware, known worldwide primarily for its Windows family of operating systems and Microsoft Office document management software. Today, Microsoft produces a wide range of products: server software suites, games, software development tools, and Xbox gaming consoles.

Microsoft regularly makes acquisitions of other software developers. In particular, the acquisition of Navision, Solomonruen, and Great Plainsruen resulted in a new major line of Microsoft Dynamics (formerly called Microsoft Business Solutions) in the Microsoft portfolio.

In April 2021, it was announced that Microsoft received a contract from the US Department of Defense to supply wearable augmented reality devices to the army. The contract amount is $21.9 billion. Over the next ten years, Microsoft must supply 120,000 devices based on its HoloLens augmented reality glasses to the US Army.

Microsoft recruitment process in 2024

  1. Online application form
    • One of the first stages of the recruitment process is filling in the application form on Microsoft Careers website.

    • The online application form is usually presented as a questionnaire with the option of importing data from a LinkedIn or CV file.

    • The applicant is required to provide information about work experience, education, skills and other necessary details.

    • There may be questions both about job preferences (e.g. desired type of employment, country and city of residence) and more personal questions (e.g. race and ethnicity, religion, disability)

  2. Online tests
    • The next stage of the Microsoft recruitment process is an online assessment. The candidate will be sent an email invitation to complete Microsoft tests.

    • Microsoft uses different types of recruitment tests to assess candidates and their suitability for the position they are applying for.

    • Candidates are most often asked to complete the following tests:

  3. Phone / Video Interview
    • Successful candidates are invited for a 15-20 min. phone call.

    • Soft skills are usually assessed during this call by the Microsoft recruiter.

    • In some cases, Microsoft hiring manager may invite you for a video interview (most commonly conducted with HireVue.) For software engineering positions, candidates may be asked to complete a coding challenge (problems on algorithms + take-home challenges.)

  4. Assessment centre
    • Successful candidates are invited to visit the nearest Microsoft headquarters or office.

    • Candidates will have a chance to personally meet the hiring manager, team leaders and seniors during the assessment day.

    • Microsoft may organise a group exercise with candidates as part of the hiring procedure.

  5. Partner interview
    • The final stage of the recruitment process.

    • The candidate will have a chance to meet the hiring manager, department director and/or division lead.

    • Normally, there is no assessment at this stage.

    • Candidates are mostly expected to demonstrate soft skills and a desire to join Microsoft.
