Barclays Plc is a bank holding company that provides retail banking, credit card, corporate, investment banking and asset management services in Europe, the Americas, Africa and Asia. It operates in nine segments: UK retail and business banking, European retail and business banking, African retail and business banking, investment banking, corporate banking, wealth and investment management, head office functions and other operations. The company was founded on 20 July 1896 and is headquartered in London, UK.

The main divisions of Barclays Plc:

  • Barclays UK - UK operations in 2020 generated revenues of £6.347bn, net income of £325m and assets of £289.1bn; home market with 859 branches and 21,300 employees. Main business lines in the UK:
    • Personal Banking - retail banking, turnover £3.522bn;
    • Barclaycard Consumer UK - credit cards, turnover £1.519bn;
    • Business Banking - banking services to companies ranging from small private start-ups to large corporates and asset management, turnover £1.306bn;
  • Barclays International - overseas turnover in 2020 of £15.921bn, net profit of £2.22bn, assets of £1.042 trillion, number of employees of 10,800 (36,900 in 2016).
  • Head Office - Head Office operations in 2020 generated a net loss of £1.019bn on the books, with the number of employees in this division increasing from one hundred to 50,900 compared to 2016 (the remaining stake in Barclays Africa Group Limited and the abolished Barclays Non-Core division were transferred to this division).

  • Rest of Europe and the Middle East - 3,300 employees;

Barclays recruitment process in 2024

  1. Online application form
    • One of the first stages of the recruitment process is filling in the application form on Barclays Careers website.

    • The online application form is usually presented as a questionnaire with the option of importing data from a LinkedIn or CV file.

    • The applicant is required to provide information about work experience, education, skills and other necessary details.

    • There may be questions both about job preferences (e.g. desired type of employment, country and city of residence) and more personal questions (e.g. race and ethnicity, religion, disability)

  2. Phone / Video Interview
    • Successful candidates are invited for a 15-20 min. phone call.

    • Soft skills are usually assessed during this call by the Barclays recruiter.

    • In some cases, Barclays hiring manager may invite you for a video interview (most commonly conducted with HireVue.) For software engineering positions, candidates may be asked to complete a coding challenge (problems on algorithms + take-home challenges.)

  3. Online tests
    • The next stage of the Barclays recruitment process is an online assessment. The candidate will be sent an email invitation to complete Barclays tests.

    • Barclays uses different types of recruitment tests to assess candidates and their suitability for the position they are applying for.

    • Successful candidates are invited to visit the nearest Barclays headquarters or office.

    • Candidates will have a chance to personally meet the hiring manager, team leaders and seniors during the assessment day.

    • Barclays may organise a group exercise with candidates as part of the hiring procedure.

  5. Partner interview
    • The final stage of the recruitment process.

    • The candidate will have a chance to meet the hiring manager, department director and/or division lead.

    • Normally, there is no assessment at this stage.

    • Candidates are mostly expected to demonstrate soft skills and a desire to join Barclays.
